How to fix your mistakes in ministry

Being in youth ministry can be hard. We all make mistakes, I do. (Did he just admit that?) Honestly, if we looked at all my mistakes we make, we would be pretty depressed. Focusing on every mistake is unhealthy, its how you fix your mistakes that matters. Fixing your mistakes involves a lot of time. You have to understand that confession of sin and spending time with God is only the start of fixing a problem. God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins. He can help us fix our mistakes.

How to fix your mistakes in ministry

  1. Hit the book – After you have made the mistake, realize that you can not go back and change the past. Whether it was leadership that pointed out your wrong doing or a friend, you have to realize that it happened. The first part of fixing the problem involves acknowledging that it happened and dealing with it. You got to move forward. To move forward you need to go check out what the scriptures say. So many people try to handle there mistakes without looking to what God says. If we try to fix the mistake by ourself we will only make the problem worse. The word of God is alive and full of answers. Take an hour (at the minimum) and focus on what the word says. 2 Timothy 3:16 says that “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Let the word of God teach, rebuke, and correct you.
  2. Prayer – This is where I have gone wrong so many times. I have made a mistake and not been “prayed up” before I went to “handle” it. You need to focus on what happened, read the scripture, and pray about every part of the mistake. Let God tell you your next action. Listen to His voice and not your own. Take the time to pray for the people you might need to approach or the individuals you need to apologize to. Pray for wisdom and guidance in fixing your mistake. If you think you can take care of your mistake by yourself, rethink why your in ministry. You can’t do anything without God’s help. Matthew 18 says “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. “I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Which side of the verse are you on? Let God tell you and act accordingly.
  3. Just Do It! – The biggest part of fixing your mistakes is admitting you were wrong and actually fixing the problem. The action step is the hardest for everyone because it involves humility. Go talk to the people involved. Apologize for being an idiot. So many times pride gets in the way. We young guns (and older guys too) like to think that we were never in the wrong but honestly, we were. We need to get rid of what we want and focus on what God wants. James 1:14-15 “Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. ” Don’t let Satan get a foothold in your life. Knock that mistake out.
  4. Move on – Don’t get bogged down on your mistake. Realize you were wrong, fix the mistake, ask God to help you learn from it so it doesn’t happen again, and move on. You got people to see, kids to talk to, and a million other things on your plate. The best pastors in the world realized when they were wrong and moved on. They learned from what just happened. The disciples were constantly learning from Jesus as they screwed up.

Fix your mistakes today.
