What I’m Reading

The Art of War: Sun Tzu

  • About: Sun Tzu’s The Art of War is as timely for business people today as it was for military strategists in ancient China. Written in China more than 2,000 years ago, Sun Tzu’s classic The Art of War is the first known study of the planning and conduct of military operations.
  • Comments: Reading through this under the lens of fighting off Satan and spiritual warfare. You’ll never look at a relationship with Jesus and the “battle” the same way ever again.

Essentials of Prayer: E.M. Bounds

  • About: E. M. Bounds is the foremost authority in the knowledge and intimacy of prayer. This book will elevate the reader in the mode and practice of prayer far above any other… All due to the hours of devotion spent by Mr. Bounds.
  • Comments: After completing The Necessity of Prayer, this work follows suit. A new outlook on prayer follows anything read by E.M. Bounds work. While Essentials is good, The Necessity of Prayer might be one of the best books I have ever read on the subject.

The Measure of a Man: Gene Getz

  • About: Gene Getz delivers the newly enhanced message of what it takes to be a man of God. Men will gain encouragement for what they can be in Christ as fathers, husbands, and mentors to other men.
  • Comments: Two chapters in and excited for what’s to come. Love anything that talks about principles; this work is right up my alley. Anxious to get into discussions with other men about the material, hearing their thoughts regarding these biblical principles.

How to Win Friends and Influence People: Dale Carnegie

  • About: The rock-solid, time-tested advice in this book has carried thousands of now famous people up the ladder of success in their business and personal lives.
  • Comments: Great book with so many good takeaways. Reading it again under the lens of biblical leadership and weighing the truths inside against scripture to test validity. Never take one’s opinions as gospel, let the Bible do that!

Fight: Craig Groeschel

  • About: Craig Groeschel helps you uncover who you really are—a man created in the image of God with a warrior’s heart—and how to fight the good fight for what’s right. You will find the strength to fight the battles you know you need to fight—the ones that determine the state of your heart, the quality of your marriage, and the spiritual health of your family.
  • Comments: Often times the material feels dangerously close to John Eldredge Wild at Heart study. However, I’m super excited the guys at church are getting a lot out of it so I’m going on the trip as well.

What are you reading?

Riding Carpets

In the movie Aladdin there is a scene where princess Jasmine gets on Aladdin’s carpet to take a tour of the city while singing the classic song “A Whole New World”…

It’s delightful.

Jasmine puts her faith in Aladdin as she takes his hand to step on the carpet.

“Do you trust me?”

She’s nervous, a little uneasy, and frightful about what is going to take place but none the less she believes Aladdin has the ability to give her a life better than the one that has been built for her.

“Do you trust me?”

Ever get to a place where you feel uneasy? Restless? Not sure about what is going to happen next?  Do you want a life that is different than the one that has been built for you?

Doubt will keep you encapsulated in our man made prisons (think what would have happened if Jasmine wouldn’t have gone with Aladdin…) while faith will push you to experience “a whole new world”.

As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Ephesians 2:1-10

“Do you trust Him?”

Go ahead.  Put your faith in Christ. Step on the carpet, experience a whole new world, and let the King of Kings help you experience and achieve what you cannot do on your own.

Bible Resources

I just finished a web page for our church.  It took awhile but it was all worth it.

So what was the project?

Well, our goal this year at HCC is to get our people into a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ by spuring them on to read their Bibles more.  We realized that getting into the Bible can be a daunting, intimidating or confusing process, especially if you don’t know where to start. For some people busy schedules, events, and activities don’t give them time to properly time to research finding the right Bible. So we worked hard, taking the grunt work out of finding the proper Bible for our people so they can jump in quickly.

I figured it would be a good idea to post here, as well as on our church website, the resources we gathered.  Below is a list of six great Bibles, their online versions, an audio companion, and six websites with Bible reading plans (we are doing the HCC reading plan in the top right corner of the chart as a family right now).

These are great resources for getting you into the text.  All you have to do is click on the word(s) you are interested in and it will take you to that resource. If you have any questions feel free to post them in the comment section.
