See to it, brothers, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.
Hebrews 3:12-13

Its funny… I think about the youth in our church and even the students who we minister to on a weekly basis. We have a lot of teenager who embrace the truth. Awesome young people who are on fire for the Lord. Students who long to hear the voice of God and grow in Him. On the flip side, we are seeing students turn away because their hearts are hardened from sin issues that they have in their life. Small stupid sin issues prevent their ears from hearing the truth. They can not grow, in the Lord, because they have an unbelief inside or they have let sin creep into their lives slowly and now it has a hold on them. Their finding out that they can’t get out of the pit there in.

It’s that way all over the place. I go through this same struggle. I experience a detachment from Christ when I fail to engage in the word and meditate on the scriptures. I fail when I don’t get encouragement from others. i fail when I don’t hear that the Christian life is worth experiencing and that i should stick with Christ to get through the issues I’m going through. I suck at getting in my bible sometimes, I suck at praying at times, and I suck at having active friendships that encourage my walk. When this happens my spiritual walk declines and it’s hard or me to get my head back in the game. I see the same trend in students.

Hebrews tells us to see to it that none of us have a hardened heart. Meaning that we are responsible to our brother and sister in Christ to acknowledge a sinful heart and turn an unbeliever into followers of Christ. How in the heck are unbelievers going to come to know Christ if we are constantly putting each other down? A key word grabs my attention that I didn’t catch before, “encourage”. How did we miss that? We need to encourage each other daily so that we do not let our hearts be hardened. So we can hear the word of God. I can preach until I am blue in the face but until we uplift and encourage we will always be hardened by sin. That’s what Christian’s are here for. Not to tear down but to uplift. We need teenagers, young people, and everyone else who calls themselves a follower of Christ to go to each other in love and encourage each other that this fight, this life is worth it.

We do not need just followers of Christ but people who daily devote themselves to seeking what God wants from them in their life. People who encourage each other when they fall and even when they don’t fall. In my ministry, I want people to realize that they have an active part in the body of Christ. They can uplift others for the body. Stop tearing down others. Stop trying to be right all the time. Stop not dealing with sin issues and deal with them so that your heart may be soft to hear the word of God speaking clearly to you.

“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you – unless, of course, you fail the test?” -2 Corinthians 13:5
