Internet Friends

Every since I got my website I have slowly drifted away from facebook and other “internet community” websites. I logged on to facebook the other day to find that over five new people wanted to be my “friend”. Friend is a funny word used very loosely in our society with many meanings.  For example,

  1. A friend can be a person that you know well. This may be someone you have affection for and trust with life’s hardest issues. An example would be a best friend.
  2. A friend could also be an ally. Someone who provides assistance in your life, a worker, a pastor, or even a teacher.
  3. A friend could be an acquaintance. This might be someone you knew in the past, lost contact with over time, or someone you see once in awhile but never know them extremely well.
  4. A friend could be someone who supports you. This might be someone who’s “got your back”.  An example would be someone who plays on your sports team, ministry team, or co-worker.

While the bottom three are easily obtained, (numbers three and four are perfect facebook and myspace examples) the number one and two definitions for a friend are rarely accomplished.  Outside of your family (they have to love you) who knows you really well?  Not the fake you that is projected on internet, but the real you, in the flesh.   Who do you allow to provide assistance with your life?  Who do you call a friend that has genuine affection for the real you?  Who can you trust with life’s hardest issues?

Integrity and authenticity are critical components for genuine friendships and healthy relationships.

Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.” -John 15:13-15
