The “Who”

My buddy Josh recently had a post on his website about where his heart for students came from and the people who “shaped” him. He had a list of three people or experiences that have helped shaped his heart. The post was all about the people that have pushed him and encouraged him, giving him the opportunities to serve. I was so blown away by the post I figured I would contribute by giving my three.

  1. Ken Muck – My dad has been the heart behind the ministry that I currently serving by the example he set years ago. My dad took my mom and my sister and I almost twenty years ago without any hesitation and raised a house into a home. Through all the tough times, my dad never once kicked me out of the house or did anything to make me feel like I was not his son. Dad showed me time and time again how to be a Godly man, get a good Godly wife, and make time for what’s important in life, like fishing. My father is the only person I know who has the ability to speak to any group of people and captivate his audience within the first ten seconds. His example is one I strive for on a daily basis. If my father didn’t mumble under his breath, he would be perfect in my eyes. Dad’s drive is in his passion for the Lord. I have seen and heard about my dad sharing the gospel with an uncountable amount of people.  Those who believe in Christ did so because they have seen Christ work in his life.  They know it’s real through my dad’s actions. He will do anything for anyone.  He will go the extra mile because it’s the “right thing to do”.
  2. Bill Alison – Bill lead me to the Lord and for that I will always be grateful. His passion for coffee and spiritual growth is amazing. He has one of the best personalities that I have ever come across. If your not smiling after meeting Bill then your not meeting the right Bill. Bill came into my life at the right time to push a stubborn young man into the right direction. Bill will always tell you how it is, straight up. Even though we don’t “talk” a lot, I would like to think that my “no bull” attitude comes from his leadership.
  3. James Joiner – James is a one of a kind dude. James was on the Grace College leadership staff as as the chaplain for sometime.  I talked him into meeting once a week with me. Every time we went our James would ask me the most random questions and “think” about the answer I gave him. He was the one person who taught me that you don’t need to talk all the time to say a lot and the importance of asking good questions.

Like Josh said on his site, “This is in no way an exhaustive list, but an attempt to see where my heart came from. And though ultimately, I understand and know that God gives desires and as we seek Him more each day we become more in line with what He wants from us, I also understand He puts people in our lives to push us (sometimes against our will) to be all that God wants us to be. ”

So who in your world has shaped you? Have you thanked them for doing so?

What an encouraging post. I love reading and hearing about God’s faithfulness in other people’s lives. If you’re ever in Ohio, we definitely should connect. Keep serving!
