I Doubt It

One of the things I constantly fight in my life is doubt.  The further I go in ministry, the more I realize that I’m not the only one.  Most members of the body of Christ go through a period, or a time of doubt.  It’s a normal part of the walk with Christ.  Some people think it’s unhealthy or have been taught that doubting harms the relationship we have with Christ, some people should have read a little closer to the word.

As a youth pastor, a lot of my students doubt God.  They doubt He will move, he will work in their life, or that He even exists.  I have to admit that I share in this struggle with them.  As a pastor, I’m under attach just as much, if not more, than my students and congregation.  So my doubt comes on strong and quick.  It eats at me, I ask questions, I get jaded.  Questions from my students and myself can include, “What if I’m just talking to myself when I pray?  What if God really doesn’t love me?  What if God doesn’t have time for me today?”

Remember this about your questions and the way you doubt, everybody goes through that period but it’s how you react in your time of doubt that matters.  When you doubt that God is alive and real, don’t shut down, shout out.  Share what is going on inside through prayer.  Relate what your feeling inside to Christ.  There are times in my personal friendships with people that I doubt I doubt as well.  It’s how I react to them that matters.  If i shut down on them, the relationship goes nowhere.  However, if I confront them with whatever doubt I’m facing, we can work through the problem and they can clear up any confusion.  God is the same way.  He wants to hear what’s on your heart.  His desire is to hear why you doubt and what your doubting about.

The first step to overcoming doubt is to let it out.  Seek God out.  Revealing your questioning to Him.  God knows what’s going on inside of us but it’s our job to reveal that to Him.  He desires to personally hear from your heart.

Trust in Him at all times, Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us.

How are you overcoming doubt?
