Parent Conference Notes: Guidepost #3

The following is third and final part from my notes at the Engage Parent Conference that happened last Saturday.

Guidepost #3: A relevant parent knows they’re relevant when illustrating Christ with their life.

The strategy for a parent to be relevant to their students must first and foremost be to imitate their heavenly father. If you believe Christ died on the cross for your sin, that He is the standard in which you live your life, and He alone is your heavenly father, then your behavior in front of your child must imitate that of Jesus Christ. If God is the standard you claim and His word (the Bible) is the standard for your life, then that must be the standard you set and illustrate for your student.

Get this:
o If you don’t know Christ as Savior, they won’t know (or want to know) Christ as Savior.
o If you don’t have an active, emotional, visual relationship with Christ, they won’t have an active, emotional, visual relationship with Christ.
o If you don’t go to church, they won’t want to go to church (both parents, not just one).

A relevant parent knows the strategy to engage their student is to practice what they preach. Your student doesn’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. They will know how much you care when you love them the same way Christ loves you. It’s the foundation for all other development.

Let me be blunt for a second: if your not doing it, don’t expect your kid to do it.

Your job is first and foremost to be the parent. You set the example. It is so important to never neglect the responsibility you have to your child both as an earthly parent and as an account to God. Psalm 127:3 says, “Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him.” You must not only fight to know your kids both inside and out but also work like crazy to set the standard that you expect for them in your own spiritual walk.

A relevant parent knows they’re relevant when illustrating Christ with their life.

Wrapping it up:

Here’s the strategy for being a relevant parent (or the three guideposts summed up).
o A relevant parent is strategic in their approach. The strategy of relevant parenting lies in the foundations of parenthood presented in the Bible. Relevant parents study the game plan to know what to do on game day. You need to be asking yourself, who’s strategy will I follow; mine or God’s?
o A relevant parent is a Christ-Centered parent. While Christian parenting may not be the most popular approach for you’re to your children (and to other parents), a firm foundation in Christ will never become outdated or expired.
o A relevant parent knows they’re relevant when they are illustrating Christ with their life. Your job is first and foremost to be the parent. You set the example. It is so important to never neglect the responsibility you have to your child both as an earthly parent and as an account to God. Don’t just talk the talk, walk the walk.

What did I miss?
