How to Pray

There are many elements that are important in prayer.

Here are a few to consider:

  1. Start with Worship: Worship is the essence of all prayer. In Matthew chapter six Jesus used the word “Father” ten times. Only those who have true inner righteousness can address God in that way in worship.
  2. Continue in Reverence: God’s nameis Holy, that is, revered.  We need to get to a place in which we are admiring and respecting our God, thee God, for who He is and what He has done.
  3. Pour out Desire: Namely the desire for the Kingdom of God.  Unlike emergent thought, the “eternal kingom” hasn’t come yet.  Therefore in our prayers there needs to be a desire for assurance that God will fulfill all His covenant promises to His people.
  4. Present Requests for Today: Forget tomorrow for a second and let’s focus on what’s going on today. Prayer is to include the request that God’s will be accomplished today on earth as it is being accomplished in heaven, that is, fully and willingly.  This is a focus on others and the needs around us and how God is using us as His people to accomplish these tasks.
  5. Petition Personal Needs: Much like sending out requests, but a petition is more of a focus on personal physical needs. Again, think along the lines of “sufficient for today.”
  6. Continue in Spiritual Needs and Forgiveness: Now we move on to spiritual needs of the ay and forgiveness.  This also implies that the the one in prayer needs not only to ask for forgiveness but also to forgive those who had offended him. Sins as moral debts, reveal our shortcomings before God.
  7. Close in Deliverance: Recognize that you are spiritual weak and pray for deliverance from temptation to evil.

In the end it looks something like this:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.
