Momentum – Day 5 – Jeff Bogue (Closing Session)

Jeff Bogue: Jeff is the pastor of Grace Church in Akron Ohio. (I couldn’t find a bio on him anywhere.)

“When we don’t trust someone’s heart, we won’t listen to what they say.”

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Yoke: Growing up relating to oxen pulling materials/people. Jesus is not there to help us set out to accomplish what we want to accomplish. Jesus says that he wanted to be linked (yoked) to the people that they would be able to be called that which was like Jesus (Christians). It was to lose an identity and gain a new one. They (those who would follow Christ) would live, act, and move like Christ. They would stay in his shadow (yoked to Jesus).

“Learn from me because I love you” -Jesus

James 1:27 “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

AND is in the text three times. He is not speaking about our behavior, he is is saying that we must move past motives and desires but keep our faith pure by having the FAITH and MIND of Jesus. Your identity should be that of CHRIST because you have given your life to HIM.

Our faith is essentially counter that which is in the world. *this is hard.

If someone is teaching you God’s Word you must cling to that because it is the teaching of the Word. We cannot attend churches simply off preference but practice (service and application).

My life should be so distinguished from the world around me that everything that Jesus is, that is what i should be.

Willpower is not what causes us to overcome sin, freedom from pollution is gained as you fill your life with Christ. (James 1:25) We are not after the will of God but more after the heart of God.

The solution to my sin is loving Jesus.

I’m never going to get control over myself… God has to do that through the power of Christ. *This hit me right between the eyes.

We don’t read our Bibles to get information but connection. (oil and water illustration here = awesome)

“Behavior will not produce love but love will alter behavior.”

What if I could hear God’s heart when I read my Bible? What if God isn’t out to get you? What if God isn’t waiting for you to screw up? What if God isn’t trying to control your life? What if his yoke is light? What if his heart is gentle/humble? What if God is giving us information for our benefit? What if God is calling us to know Him more/be free? What if God wants us to express love/His love?

Maybe God love you and wants you to find His heart.

I love Jeff… what a servant.
